Ok, so I bought the Canon 1D Mark III! I have done two photo sessions so far, and I've gotta say that I love it. I came from a Canon 70D. Yes, the 1D III is an 11 year old camera, and yes the controls are a lot different than coming from a new age standard DSLR. If you understand exposure, and understand the exposure triangle and how to manipulate the camera to meet your needs, than any camera system, new or old, can be great for you. The 1D produces a look on the images that I love, I have changed the ccontrols around a little to meet my needs, and so far it has produced beautiful images! I do enjoy the heavier camera, and the built in battery grip. I makes life easier, especially on wedding days! Yes the weight can get to you, but that's the name of the game with this camera.

If you have any questions at all about my usage with the camera body, or my experience at all, don't be afraid to write me and let me know!

IDAHO ENGAGEMENT SESSION : ZACHARY + VANESSA http://dsphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2015/9/idaho-engagement-session-zachary-vanessa IDAHO ENGAGEMENT SESSION : ZACHARY + VANESSA

hey met initially met online. She received a message from him, but couldn't respond right away - as she had a full time job and child. But when she did, they hit it off, and the relationship only grew from there! They dated for over a year before Zach popped the question, and it was while on a date geocaching. On their search, Vanessa was the first to find the cach! She was obviously excited, as she wasn't usually the one to find it. Inside it, there was a scroll, and on it, it read "Will you marry me?" She turned around, and there was Zach down on one knee!

They fell in love! They love to spend time together on road trips, doing crafts, Netflix and Great food!

Even with a busy life of two full time jobs and 4 children to raise, you can see the love radiating out of them when they are together!

I am thrilled to be photographing their wedding in the next coming days!

Zachary and Vanessa are planning a small wedding for family and friends in Spokane, WA. in the month of September!

On the day after your wedding, there will be a few things left.  There will be matching flower arrangements in homes all over town. There will be tuxes to be returned.  There will be achy feet being dipped in ice water.  There will be a beautiful gown or dress desperately seeking the services of a dry cleaner.  There will be a few people vowing to never drink again.  There will be a desperate search for enough space in the freezer for the top layer of the cake, and other leftovers.  And there will most likely be a flight to catch.  But most significantly, there will be your memories of one of the most important days of your life. And those, no one can touch; they’ll be inside your heart forever.

*Session Fees cover only my time and talent.  Digital images or prints are sold separately through your personal site that is password protected.

Relocating business and life... http://dsphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/8/relocating-business-and-life “What? We have to move?” Those are the words I had to hear my daughter utter earlier this year. My head dropped as my wife and I told our children the sad news-Our lives revolve around them. Also devastating, was that I had finally built up my photography business, was getting relatively consistent bookings, was making a profit and was finally gaining some traction.

In the coming month we will pack up our belongings, the weight of relocating my part time business is beginning to take it’s toll. After doing a lot of research on various forums, speaking with mentors and doing some soul searching, I became excited about transition. This was going to give me an opportunity to fine-tune my brand, pricing and policies, so I am slowly getting ready to take on this new location by storm!

So, When the topic of photography comes up at our new location, I will proudly announce that I was new to the area and am looking for new clients. I plan on starting a new blog series that will debut next month. This entails teaming up with a bunch of local businesses in our new location. I will photograph their business, products and services. I will also be doing an interview with the owner. All of this will be featured in a spotlight blog post with links to their business. In return, they keep my card and coupon at their business to hand out to their clients who are looking for photography services.

I am also offering holiday mini sessions. This gives clients in the new area a little taste of me. I’m offering 25 holiday cards with their session. This will give 25 extra people a little taste of me, as the card hangs on their refrigerator. With all of these ideas, I’m confident my name will spread out there and it’s only a matter of time before I’m back at it again.

Have you relocated your business or have a similar experience? Share it in the comments section...

Advise for first time models... http://dsphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/6/advise-for-first-time-models

So your interested in modeling? Well thats great. Modeling can be very a fun way of expressing yourself! Even Professional models had to start somewhere, experience needs to be gained somewhere.

A good photographer will have worked with a number of first time models before and will have a good understanding of what to expect and how to get the most out of shooting with someone new. The best advice I can give is don’t worry about it. Relax. An experienced photographer will do whatever they can to create the type of environment where you can do just that — RELAX.

Relaxed poses will look the best, it will not look rushed, stressed or uncomfortable. Instead of just jumping straight into shooting with your photographer-get to know a little about them, so you can relate. I try to lighten the mood throughout the session and get the person or people that I'm photographing comfortable. If you trust your photographer and trust their work, you will feel less stressed and more comfortable with them.

Getting in front of a camera for the first time (or first few times) can be intimidating. In fact, even pros still get cases of nervousness. So don’t worry, it’s natural.

-If you are interested in modeling for your first time, or maybe have questions- write me anytime

Photography Bad Habbits http://dsphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/3/photography-bad-habbits

Hello everyone, I usually don't post about camera settings or tutorials, but I thought I'd switch it up today, with this post: 'Bad habits that can prevent you from being a better photographer, Guaranteed.'
Bad habits might not completely ruin your photos, but they can hold you back from creating the best images possible, and what's the worst part about them? We tend not to realize we even have the bad habit until it's pointed out!
Bad habits that can prevent you from being a better photographer, Guaranteed.
1. Standing Still
If you are keeping your feet still when you are shooting, it is a surefire way to limit your creative potential. It is an easy habit to fall into, especially if you use a zoom lens. I can tell you that I have had to try to not to do this one myself. Instead of shooting a scene from just one perspective, get into the habit of walking around, moving closer and stepping back. Don't rely on the zoom! Just like with a prime lens (Non-zoom lens)-Use your feet, and see how quickly you start getting way more interesting perspectives.
Note: If you're shooting a 2 min long exposure you can completely ignore this advice. In that instance, standing still is a very good thing. ;)
2. Chimping
What the heck is chimping? Chimping is the act of taking a photo, and then looking at the result on the back of your screen while going "Ooooo!". There's nothing inherently wrong with checking out your photos on your camera - it can be a great way to learn, and fix any glaring mistakes. The problem exists when you do this, and in the process, stop paying attention to what's going on in front of you and miss capturing a great moment.
So use the back of the screen only when completely necessary (checking your exposure in tricky lighting, for example) and then keep your eyes on the scene, ready to get the shot. I will check the exposure and sharpness on the display when fist testing out lighting and exposure at the beginning of a shoot, and if lighting changes. Looking down constantly, will distract you from your subject-it will not reassure your model or subject that you know what you are doing, if you are just fooling around with settings the whole time.
3. Bringing The Camera Down To Change Settings This goes along with chimping, but is a different bad habit. I still do this all the time. I don't know why, but basically, when I need to change my ISO, I bring the camera down, look at the screen, and change it. And by doing this, I take my eyes off the scene, and miss important moments.
Doing this will take a considerable mental effort-trust me, I do this all the time too. It requires memorizing where all the buttons are, but when you do manage it, it will really help you to stay focused, and keep careful watch on your subject. Take the time to play around with settings on your own time-be the master of your camera, and know exactly what will happen when you change certain settings! You can even do this while you're just sitting on the couch reading articles about bad photography habits. ;)
4. Talking From Behind Your Camera:  Have you ever been directing your subjects, and received a puzzled look and a "Huh?", and then realized that you had the camera covering your face for every word? If you have this bad habit, it's definitely an important one to break!
5. Neglecting To Square Up
First, if you have a horizon in your image, make it level. The human eye expects horizons to be level, so one that is slightly tilted will be distracting. If you have trouble with this bad habit, you can install a grid in your viewfinder to help you out.
Note: Sometimes it can aid your image to have a tilted horizon (perhaps to create a sense of movement), but it should be a conscious decision, not a careless mistake! Leading lines will help viewers. They will be drawn into your images, but this needs to be a concise decision when composing before you push down that shutter button.
Then, when you're shooting against a wall or a building - something that has straight lines - be sure that you are standing perfectly square to it. If you're at a very slight angle, the lines won't be straight, and it will again feel distracting. This rule can be broken as well, as long as you make the decision to do it!
6. Thinking You'll "Fix It Later"
I have seen this this a lot. Thinking that you will just fix the exposure, or slight fix in Photoshop or LightRoom afterward. This habit can apply to anything from shooting with an incorrect exposure, failing to move a stray hair, or leaving a small piece of garbage in the frame. It's easy to get caught up in wanting to get the shot, and thinking you can just fix these little things afterwards on your computer. And you can. But it's at the cost of improving your skills and being an efficient shooter.
Get as much right in camera as you possibly can. Don't let digital processing be a crutch that prevents you from strengthening your technical skills! It's rewarding when you set the image up exactly as you would like, and get the perfect exposure and composition without having to spend 3 hours fixing one image in post.
And seriously, you'll be cursing yourself when you have to edit that stray hair out of dozens of photos, spending hours on the computer, when you could have spent 10 seconds to move it during the shoot. That's a mistake that you'll hopefully only make once!
Bad habits are easy to pick up, and difficult to break. But if you keep working on adopting good habits, and getting rid of the bad ones, you're sure to see your technique, and your photos, just keep getting better and better!
You're Turn!
What are some other bad photography habits that you should break? Tell me in the comments below!

This, so far, has been a fantastic lens. It looks big, and bulky, but I have had no problems carrying it around, I also have a Black-rapid strap that helps me out a lot as well. The zoom ring and focal ring are fluid, you can turn these both with no effort-makes shooting a breeze. The bokeh that the lens produces is beautiful, it separates the background and subject beautifully.

I can fully recommend this lens to both crop sensor users and full frame users. It is a lot cheaper than it's competition, and creates the same or better bokeh than the Nikon or Cannon versions of this lens. It performs wonderfully, I don't see why you would waste your money on Nikon or Cannon versions-maybe someone can enlighten me in the Comments.

If anyone has questions about this lens, or Photography in general, please don't hesitate to write me, you can do this through Facebook, Twitter, or through this site :)

Also sign my guestbook, and let me know you stopped by.
